**SEO, AEO, and GEO get used as synonyms, but they are not** — each one competes for a different space, and that space gets smaller at every stage. In SEO you compete to be one of 10 options. In AEO you compete to be one of 2-3 sources cited in an answer. In GEO you compete to be *the* recommendation, with no visible alternatives for the user.

Here is that difference explained with a simple example, and more importantly, why it is a real opportunity for a small business rather than just a threat.

## The funnel that narrows at every stage

When someone searches **"best web agency in Medellín"** on classic Google, they see a list of 10 results. They have 10 options to choose from, and they decide calmly which one to visit.

When that same person runs the search and Google shows them an AI Overview, they no longer see 10 options — they see a written answer, backed by 2 or 3 cited sources. The rest of the usual results fade into the background, almost invisible.

And when that person asks the same question directly to ChatGPT or Perplexity, they generally get **a single recommendation**, or two at most. No list. No "page 2." There is one answer, and that answer is the one the user follows.

That is what separates SEO from AEO from GEO: they are not three names for the same thing, they are three different funnels, each narrower than the last. **Ranking well in the wide funnel (SEO) no longer guarantees anything about the narrow funnel (GEO).**

If you want the technical detail of what your site needs for AI to cite it, we cover that in depth in our guide on how to get ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity to recommend your brand (GEO and AEO for 2026) — currently only published in Spanish on our blog.

## The numbers behind this shift

This shift is not a marketing theory. There are real numbers behind it, and it is worth being precise about them:

- **AI referral traffic to the world's top 1,000 websites grew 357% year-over-year in June 2025** (compared to June 2024), according to Similarweb data reported by [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2025/07/25/ai-referrals-to-top-websites-were-up-357-year-over-year-in-june-reaching-1-13b/). ChatGPT accounts for more than 80% of those referrals.
- **44% of users who already search with AI consider it their primary source of information**, versus 31% who still prioritize traditional search, according to [McKinsey's August 2025 survey](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/growth-marketing-and-sales/our-insights/new-front-door-to-the-internet-winning-in-the-age-of-ai-search) of roughly 1,900 US consumers.

**An honesty note:** back in 2024, Gartner predicted traditional search volume would drop 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots gained ground. We are now in 2026, and that dramatic drop did not happen as announced — Google still holds more than 90% of the search market. We would rather tell you that plainly than repeat a debunked number just because it sounds dramatic. What is real, measurable, and happening as you read this are the two numbers above: generative AI is already an active discovery channel, not an experiment.

## The good news: small businesses can compete in this funnel

There is something counterintuitive about this shift, and it is a real advantage for small businesses: **in traditional SEO, winning a competitive search largely depends on years of accumulated domain authority** — something large agencies and established media already have, and a small business cannot build quickly.

In GEO, the criteria are different. AI models do not reward domain age alone — they reward **clarity, structure, and verifiable evidence** in what the content says. A small business with a well-structured article, concrete data, and real evidence can get cited over a much larger competitor with generic content.

This does not mean SEO stops mattering — GEO is actually built on top of solid SEO foundations, as we explain in [why AI recommends fast websites (GEO)](/en/why-ai-recommends-fast-websites-geo-2026/). It means the playing field, on the AI side, is defined less by who has been around longer and more by who answers better. And on that field, a well-focused small business has a real shot.

## What this means for your digital strategy

If your business depends on customers finding you online, this is worth rethinking where your effort goes:

1. **Do not abandon SEO.** It is still the foundation. AEO and GEO are built on top of technically solid sites, not a replacement for them.
2. **Prioritize clarity over volume.** One article that precisely answers a specific question is worth more, on this new ground, than ten generic ones.
3. **Measure more than the click.** If your content gets cited by an AI but does not drive a direct click, that is still a brand-visibility win — do not write it off as a failure.
4. **Start where your competitors still are not.** Niche spaces, where nobody else has built clear evidence yet, are where a small business wins fastest.
